New FCs with Bluetooth and GPS — What's Really Convenient and What's Ballast

Bluetooth on FC (Flight Controller — the drone's "brain") is no longer a novelty, and it's genuinely a convenient feature. The main advantage is the ability to quickly change quadcopter settings directly in field conditions without cable connections. Especially useful when you need to quickly adjust parameters between flights.
GPS in FC: Debatable Decision
Technical Limitations
Built-in GPS has physical limitations due to size. A small antenna inside the FC cannot effectively "catch" satellites compared to large external modules. M10 GPS (separate GPS module with powerful antenna) works faster and more accurately — like comparing a small radio receiver with a large rooftop antenna.
Question of Practicality
GPS isn't needed by all FPV pilots:
- Freestyle in urban conditions — functions like Position Hold or Return to Home are practically unused
- Weight increase for an unnecessary function becomes extra ballast
- Application specifics — for most FPV disciplines, GPS isn't critically important
Economic Aspect
Worth comparing costs:
- FC with built-in GPS + Bluetooth
- Separate GPS module + FC with Bluetooth
Often separate components provide more flexibility in choice and can be more economically advantageous.
Conclusion
Bluetooth — definitely a useful function for field settings.
Built-in GPS — more of a marketing move than a real necessity. For most FPV tasks, it's better to choose an external GPS module or do without it entirely.
